First-timers: Myeongdong. Every classic first-trip morning — Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Namsan — starts closer to your bed, and after a 12-hour flight, 'everything is 15 minutes away' is worth more than any bar.
Under 30, travelling with friends: Hongdae, no debate. You'll be out when Myeongdong is shuttered, the beds are cheaper, and walking home beats a ₩15,000 night taxi across town.
Families: Myeongdong — bigger rooms, flat streets, food kids recognize, and the NANTA theatre around the corner for the jet-lagged evening. Hongdae at midnight is not where you want a stroller.
Couples: split call. Shopping-and-sights couples take Myeongdong; bar-hopping couples take Hongdae. If neither fits, the real answer might be Insadong for hanok charm or Itaewon for restaurants and rooftop bars.

Is Myeongdong or Hongdae better for first-time visitors?
Myeongdong. It's 2–3 subway stops from the palace circuit, one stop from the airport railroad at Seoul Station, and the nightly street market means dinner requires zero research. Hongdae only wins the first trip if nightlife is the trip.
How far apart are Hongdae and Myeongdong?
About 20–25 minutes: Line 2 from Hongik University to Euljiro 1-ga plus a 5-minute walk, or a ₩12,000–15,000 taxi. Close enough to stay in one and give the other an evening — which is exactly what we recommend.
Is Hongdae too loud to sleep in?
On the main drags near Exit 9, yes — Friday and Saturday run literally until dawn. Book toward Yeonnam-dong or the Hapjeong side and it drops to a hum. Light sleeper who still wants the scene? Sleep in Myeongdong, taxi home at 02:00.
Which is closer to Incheon Airport?
